Cannabis has been with us, at least, since the story began to be written. Although it is logical to think that the human being has used it since much earlier. We have used many plants since the Paleolithic and now we know that animals also process and use various plants to heal, detoxify, make their homes and shelters, etc. It seems evident that we were not going to leave aside one of the most useful for our species; clothing, food, medicine, leisure, construction material and many other utilities of a plant that grows easily in much of the world geography. There are several types of marijuana and each one is cultivated for a different purpose.
Marijuana is present throughout the planet, under the influence of human beings or natural reasons, but there is not a single variety. Either by the influence of the human being or by its natural adaptation to diverse climates There are 6 types of marijuana. Let's see what they are, their characteristics and what each of them is used for:
Marijuana types – Landraces
It is very possible, although not fully demonstrated, that the human being was the vector for the dissemination of cannabis seeds throughout the world. Starting from the original wild in the Himalayan region, those that best adapted to the uses of the time would be selected, eliminating the less favored and learning over time to store the seeds of the best specimens.
When being transported, either for food use or for germination in other places, Our plant was expanding around the globe. Repeating the process in the different sites to which it arrived, selecting the varieties that worked best in each territory and those that gave the best results in terms of the preferred characteristics of the people of each region. And that was what gave rise to one of the first types of marijuana, the Landraces.
Each variety of Landrace is very genetically diverse because there has not been an exhaustive selection of the characteristics, followed by an improvement by cloning or by a recurring selection of few plants crossed with each other, which makes that a certain genetics is conserved, eliminating the rest. They have been freely crossing multitude of different plants, outdoors, so each one is very different from the others, maintaining some minimal morphological similarities, which allow us to identify them as a group. And this is what makes them so special, they are a vast reserve of genetics, which allows them to resist diseases or changes in climate, because each one will have a different defense capacity for each disease or atmospheric condition.
It is unlikely that a plague or a fluctuation in climate will end all of them. On the other hand, when they are reproduced, they are unpredictable, what we call unstable genetics, because their genetic material is very diverse.
The types of Landrace marijuana are mostly Sativas or Indica. This difference is due to the adaptation of the plant to humid climates, giving rise to sativa varieties, or to dry climates producing Indica varieties. Some will remember the Mexican and Colombian (Sivas) or the Hindus and Afghan (Indica) of the 70s and even the 80. If you want to know more about this type of marijuana we recommend you read this article.
Marijuana types – Rudelaris
The name of this type of marijuana comes from the word debris (Ruderis from Latin: "rubble") and is used to name plants that they live in places where the soil has been altered by the human being or by the forces of nature. It is usually used for plants that grow on the margins of roads, in open fields and fallow land. In the case of cannabis, they are plants that adapted to unfavorable conditions, becoming smaller and more robust. They grow naturally in Russia, Central Asia and Central Europe, also in the American Midwest, and anywhere where hemp was formerly cultivated.
Currently there is no consensus on the origin of this, it could be descendant of indica varieties, although it is classified as a subspecies, at the same level as sativa and indica. Like these, it had to adapt to the new climatic conditions as it spread to colder places. As in the case of the Landrace, it has a great genetic amplitude, as it has not been cultivated by humans.
The result of this adaptation is a smaller plant, between 30 and 80 cm, with low level of THC, trifoliate leaves (with three "fingers") and broad, but not as much as the indica, with few branches and very resistant.
Traditionally it has been used to treat depression, due to its content in CBD, but rarely for recreational uses, due to its low THC content.
This type of marijuana is very appreciated by the seed banks because of the large amount of aromas it has, its resistance, its high CBD content and that its flowering does not depend on the photoperiod, but on its maturity. This important feature is what has led to the appearance of autoflowering varieties.
Marijuana types – Indica
Indica Cannabis or Cannabis sativa indica subspecies, was described by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1785 as a second cannabis strain. This description was made based on specimens collected in India, although it is also found in central and southern Asia.
This type of marijuana was traditionally grown to produce "charas" a variety of hashish. Wild plants of this variety contain a lower degree of THC than sativa and They have been attributed greater ability to cause "high", a more corporal and less cerebral effect.
The indica plants do not usually reach two meters in height, they are structured in the shape of a Christmas tree, like a cone, they are very leafy, with short internodal distance and broad, dark green leaves. All this gives them a more solid appearance than their sisters.
The flowering period is short, from six to nine weeks, although its vegetative phase is somewhat longer. It resists better to cold and extreme climates and low humidity.
It is the type of marijuana most cultivated for its medicinal properties, because it supplies considerable levels of all cannabinoids. Although it also provides psychoactive effects, its effect is more physical and is often used to control pain and discomfort, to treat insomnia, stress and anxiety. It also helps to ease seizures and spasms, stimulates appetite and reduces inflammation. As for other uses, it is not very useful for the manufacture of fibers because of its thin crust.
Marijuana types – Sativas
The Cannabis Sativa Sativa variety, It originated in Asia, America and Africa in the tropical and subtropical zones, with different qualities but with some common characteristics such as its great height. It was first described by Carl Nilsson Linneus in 1753 and has been used for the manufacture of fibers, oil, food, etc. and has also been used for recreational and religious purposes.
It contains at least 500 compounds. More than 100 of them are called cannabinoids, some in very small amounts. Between these THC predominates and although it usually contains significant amounts of CBD, these are comparatively small, so the effect is of "energetic high", provoking euphoria and stimulating the creativity. It also tends to provoke good humor and even laughter.
This type of marijuana can reach over 4 meters high, with long branches and buds less tight than the indica and very separated knots. Of foliage less dense than indica, adapted to more humid climates, where good aeration is important. In general it is more resistant to fungi and problems derived from high humidity. Its leaves are long and narrow, a pale green color. Its appearance when the lateral branches open and grow almost as much as the central trunk resembles a candlestick. It has a fast and vigorous vegetative growth, although its phase of flowering and maturation is usually longer than in the indica. During this, the plant continues to grow, being able to quadruple its size in this phase.
The types of sativa marijuana grow both during the growth phase and the flowering phase. Due to the uniformity in the day length of the tropical zones and near the equator its maturation is slow, taking up to 6 months to reach the optimum state for harvest, for this reason, the cultivation of 100% sativa varieties is not frequent.
The proportion of THC is usually very high with respect to that of CBD, so its effect is usually more cerebral than physical and more energizing than narcotizing. Ideal for creative tasks or social activities. If the levels of THC with respect to those of CBD are very high, the effect can be highly psychedelic.
Marijuana types – Hybrids
The types of hybrid marijuana strains are Crosses between several indica and sativa cannabis plants. These crosses are produced to achieve the most appreciated characteristics of each of them. There are both Indica-dominant plants in the market (greater percentage of indica) and plants with sativa predominance (higher percentage of sativa).
Thanks to the work of seed banks and breeders, we have many varieties that adapt to the tastes and needs of each person and that allow us to experience different flavors and effects, as well as to plant in different environmental conditions.
Although it is important to consider the subspecies and the THC and CBD content, there are more than 500 components in marijuana that modulate the effects, giving a different personality and a different effect to each variety.
These varieties combine the effects and flavors of different strains, and can come from original Landraces or from some that stand out positively for some of their characteristics. The properties that are usually taken into account to get a good hybrid are:
– The amount of cannabinoids and other compounds
– The taste and aromas
– The final size of the plant
– The yield, size and weight of the buds
– The shape of the plant and its parts
– The times of growth, flowering and ripening
– Resistance to pests and diseases
– Resistance to adverse environmental conditions
– And very important, let it be a plant that grows strong, quickly and vigorously
Simplifying, these varieties are achieved by crossing several plants that provide the desired properties, selecting the best characteristics that have and cross each other, to obtain a stable variety and create multiple new types of marijuana. Due to the large number of crosses that are made today we can ensure that is the most widespread type of marijuana.
Marijuana types – Hemp
Cannabis has been considered a sacred plant because of its multiple uses on the part of the human being, not only because of its psychoactive and narcotic abilities.
Hemp is the variety of sativa cannabis used exclusively to manufacture industrial products, among them we can find:
– Textile fibers, tow and ropes, of great resistance, very soft and light.
– Food. Its seeds contain 34% protein and are very rich in fatty acids, such as omega 3.
– Fuels, oils and lubricants.
– Construction materials.
– Resistant and biodegradable plastics and agglomerates.
In Spain, especially in much of the southeast of the peninsula, the cultivation and manufacture of hemp has been very ingrained, where high quality ropes and fabrics were manufactured.
Currently the industrial hemp, to differentiate it legally from marijuana, must contain less than 0.2% THC. Even so, farmers who opt for this crop must have special permits or at least inform local authorities, depending on the EU country. In addition, they must buy the seeds from authorized seed sellers, who must obtain a certificate that guarantees that their seeds do not produce plants with a higher psychotropic level.
The characteristics of the plant depend on the purpose for which they are grown, if fibers are going to be extracted, plants will be used, tall, with great internodal distance, little woody, since the fiber is extracted from the bark. Contrary to if you are looking for the manufacture of oils and celluloses, where plants are much more woody and less hollow. In the case of seed production, the plants are similar to those of marijuana, with fewer branches.
So our beloved plant is not one, there are six varieties of marijuana, types that adapt to different uses and different latitudes, but finally, a living species that has been accompanying ours since before history began to be written.
Here’s what you need to know before seeing your regional medical dispensary:You will require a physician’s recommendation, medical cannabis certificate, and/or whatever proper documentation is needed by your state. Typically, you must be 18 or older to be eligible for a medical consent, but exceptions could be made in some states for minors with especially debilitating conditions. You will often register with a medicinal dispensary. This is to keep your medical cannabis recommendation or certificate on file for legal and regulatory purposes. There will be a waiting room. This will be to control the circulation of patients and product, but a straightforward dividing wall also gives patients privacy and direct one-on-one contact using a budtender to discuss medical problems. Many times, but not always, your purchases will be monitored by medical dispensaries. This procedure can assist budtenders and patients monitor effective medicine as well as possess a living listing of producers and products for future reference and follow up. Medicinal dispensaries usually permit you to smell and examine the buds prior to purchase. This might differ from state-to-state.
DOES AN APPLICANT NEED MUNICIPAL APPROVAL BEFORE RECEIVING A RETAIL CANNABIS LICENSE? Yes, municipal approval is required before the AGLC will subject a retail cannabis license. Applicants must get in touch with their planned municipality to learn requirements regarding municipal retail cannabis laws, zoning requirements, land-use restrictions, and location requirements regarding how near a retail shop can be into a provincial medical care facility, school, or parcel of property designated as a college reserve.
Keep non-medical cannabis legal Adults who are 19 decades or older are in a position to:Have up to 30 gram of legal dried cannabis or the equivalent in their own person.
